A new hackspace!

Comments

Like, whatever.

Ara, Dave, Jeff and I have been on a mission these past few months to build a new kind of space downtown: a place where a handful of knowledge workers can concentrate and be productive, but still collaborate and enjoy working in public. It’s not a cafe or an incubator; it’s not even a coworking space, exactly.  It’s more of a club.

Ara found the perfect spot.  It has a big community room up front and two smaller offices in back that (for now) will serve as a dedicated office for us and a deadline/conference room to share.  The downside?  The entire space was gutted and trashed.  So we’ve been outfitting it as an office, debating names (winner: dojo4), scraping it, painting it, and performing interior-design-by-committee, among other things.  These pictures show the first finish—we haven’t quite moved in yet, but we’re ready to.

The office

Enroute we established a corporate entity to manage the joint; learned about each other’s carpet preferences; and enjoyed warm beers on its sunny front porch.

As you can imagine, we’re excited. dojo4 promises to be a great place to work.  We’re hoping others will agree, and will come find us there.

Hi!  This is the first post on Hoosteeno.com.

I’ve always had a roving interest and an appetite for novelty.  I like the new challenge best; I enjoy being a beginner.  This site will be, as the slug declares, simply an ongoing account of my projects and explorations.

Immediately, I expect to post questions and ideas about these kinds of things:

  • A handful of online technologies: JQuery, ExpressionEngine, Android SDK, HTML5.
  • The monumental changes wrought on our institutions (especially media, government, and higher education) by new technologies.
  • Bikes. I like them.
  • Boulder. I live here.

As a Web developer and online community builder, I have enabled many others to share their experiences with the world.  But I’ve never tried it in long form until now.  I hope the result is worthwhile to you who visit.  I encourage your participation and welcome your comments.  You can contact me here.
